A Mental Health Care Plan is a plan of treatment activities prepared by a doctor for people with any mental health disorders. It is a system that aims to help access mental healthcare by anyone eligible as well as access healthcare at a subsidised price if you have Medicare.
Who is eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan?
Any person who has been diagnosed with a mental disorder by a doctor or a GP, they are eligible to receive a mental health care plan.
How can I obtain a mental health care plan?
In order to obtain a mental health care plan, you must first visit a GP for a potential diagnosis of your mental health issues.
If you’re concerned about your mental wellbeing, you shouldn’t delay seeking help from experts. But first, you must visit a GP who can help you find the treatments and therapies that would best work for you.
What are the benefits of a mental health care plan?

What services can I access with a mental health care plan?
Once you obtain a mental health care plan, you’re entitled to get up to 10 individual and up to 10 group consultations with allied professionals including psychologists, occupational therapists and so on. All these services are under Medicare rebates.
Can I get Medicare rebates for all sessions at once?
No, you won’t be able to access all 10 sessions in one go. After the first 6 consultations, you need to review with your plan provider and seek another referral.
Can I access my services near my home?
Yes, you can access services closer to your home, provided they are available. The best person to consult this is your doctor as they may recommend a better specialist which might not be in your area.
How much does a mental health care plan cost?
With the plan, you’re eligible for Medicare rebates for 10 sessions. If the mental health service provider is a bulk-billing facility, then you won’t be charged.
However, if they do charge, you will have to pay the difference fee and Medicare subsidy.
Is there an expiry date for the mental health care plan?
The care plan is designed for 10 sessions for one calendar year, allowing you 10 consultations with a mental health professional.
But after the first 6 sessions, you need to get another referral for the rest of the sessions for the calendar year.
